Description:

This course provides basic understanding of the symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease and other dementia (re-named "Neuro-cognitive Disorders" in DSM-5) and related cognitive-behavioral problems associated with memory loss, confusion, disorientation, combativeness,and loss of linguistic ability. It provides service providers and care givers of people with dementia or clients with significant cognitive deficits practical strategies in managing their difficulty behaviors and their dementia related psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions on the day-to-day basis with compassion and effectiveness.

Objective:
  • Identify the symptoms of dementia (re-named"Neuro-cognitive Disorders" in DSM-5) and related cognitive-behavioral problems associated with memory loss. (1 hour)
  • Analyze the behavioral symptoms of Parkinson's Disease and their relationship to Alzheimer's Disease. (1 hour)
  • Identify and describe behavioral strategies in managing symptoms of confusion and disorientation associated with Alzheimer's and other Dementia's. (1 hour)
  • Identify and describe behavioral strategies in managing symptoms of loss of linguistic ability, memory deficits and loss associated with Alzheimer's and other Dementia's. (1 hour)
  • Develop approaches and protocols in managing irritability and mood instability associated with Alzheimer's Dementia. (1hour)
  • Develop approaches and protocols in managing hallucinations and paranoid delusions associated with Alzheimer's Dementia. (1hour)
  • Describe and develop self-care strategies for care providers and family members/loved ones of individuals with different stages of Alzheimer's and Dementia's. (1 hour)            
Intended Audience:

Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Case Managers, and other Behavioral Health Professionals, Substance Abuse Counselors, Mental Health Care Professionals, Peers, and Educators.

Session Notes:

Felton Institute is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists(Provider #130043) to sponsor continuing education for marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, professional clinical counselors, and educational psychologists. Felton Institute maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. Course meets the qualifications for 7 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. 

To receive CE credits, you must attend the training in its entirety, complete course evaluation, and correctly answer the attendance question.
